“Meet me on the edge of our ruin”, il nuovo album di Nina June

Dal 26 novembre disponibile il nuovo album dell’artista di Amsterdam nota per il suo pop atmosferico, tra archi, tastiere e chitarre

Acuta osservatrice dall’intensa sensibilità, Nina June traduce in parole e musica le proprie emozioni, creando paesaggi sonori multidimensionali intrisi di archi, chitarre ed effetti sonori naturali. Con oltre 20 milioni di streaming in tutto il mondo e a poche settimane da ‘Side A – Our Garden’, l’ep pubblicato a fine giugno, Nina June annuncia la pubblicazione di ‘Meet me on the edge of our ruin‘, il disco in arrivo il 26 novembre (Nettwerk Records).

“Those ruins represent things we’ve lost. It could be friendships I’ve lost or people who I’ve truly loved in my life and moved on from. At the same time, we leave behind so many ruins as human beings. I’ve been a vegetarian since the age of six and a vegan for three years. I don’t understand why we as a species destroy our planet, leaving behind so much beauty. A ruin is anything I look back on and think, ‘That was once undamaged, now it’s broken and abandoned. Somewhere in there hides beauty. What direction am I going to take from here?’” dichiara Nina June.

‘Meet Me On The Edge Of Our Ruin’ contiene i brani dell’ep ‘Side A’ ed inediti, tra cui il singolo ‘Build A Boat’, che vede la collaborazione della celebre compositrice e produttrice Sally Herbert agli archi (Radiohead, Bjork, London Grammar) e ‘The Great Reveal’, con il feat di Jon Bryant.

Il disco vede Duncan Mills (Florence + The Machine, The Vaccines, Jake Bugg, James Murphy) alla produzione.

Nina June si avvicina alle scene musicali all’età di diciassette anni, quando lascia il villaggio di Castricum, in Olanda, per dedicarsi agli studi alla Rockacademy. Nel 2018 pubblica ‘Bon Voyage’, il debutto indipendente, con il quale comincia a farsi notare anche al di fuori dei confini nazionali con un tour in Nord America ed Europa, al termine del quale riceve il prestigioso riconoscimento olandese Zilveren Notekraker nella categoria ‘nuovi talenti’. I suoi brani compaiono in colonne sonore di serie tv e film e nel 2019 firma con Nettwerk Records con la quale pubblica l’ep ‘Shadows & Riddles’.

A marzo 2020 Nina June incontra a Londra il produttore Dunca Mills (The Vaccines, Jake Bugg, James Murphy): tra i due nasce un’alchimia immediata, ma la fase creativa dei nuovi brani viene bruscamente interrotta dalla pandemia e l’artista olandese rientra in patria.

“With this new music, I felt like I had to reinvent myself in every way. As a musician and a writer, I had to dive into the deep like never before. I always wrote love songs. When I started writing this time, I was watching documentaries and reading articles about the planet. It worried me. I thought, ‘I have to discuss this because it’s too big.’ Some of the songs are about how we—as a species—are treating other creatures and nature. It felt like time for me to speak out. There was no way back” prosegue Nina June.

Al di là dei cambiamenti devastanti nella società intorno a lei, l’artista ha trovato una via di fuga e un’altra fonte di ispirazione nei podcast. Nel mezzo della quarantena, si avventurava spesso fuori per passeggiate con drammatici podcast olandesi che filtravano attraverso le sue cuffie. “Ho notato che questi piccoli suoni illustrano la narrazione. Il sound design ti coinvolge nella storia. Quindi, ho implementato questa tecnica nella produzione per attirare tutti nel mio mondo”.

Per dare vita a questo mondo, Nina June ha scoperto una vecchia casa colonica del XVII secolo, successivamente diventata fonte di ispirazione per l’ep ‘Side A – Our Garden’ pubblicato a giugno.
